How to Check Your PCs Health

Just like we check our health from time to time, your PC also needs regular check ups to keep running smoothly. If your computer is slow, overheating, crashing, or acting weird, it might be time to check its health. A well-maintained PC runs faster, lasts longer, and avoids unexpected problems.

In this guide, I will walk you through how to check your PC’s performance, storage, battery, temperature, security, and more. 

1. Check Your PC’s Performance and Speed

If your PC is lagging, freezing, or running slow, checking its performance should be the first step.

How to Monitor CPU and RAM Usage

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Click the Performance tab to see CPU, memory (RAM), and Disk usage.
  3. If CPU or RAM usage is constantly above 80-90%, your PC might be struggling. 

Here is the tip: If you see high usage, close unnecessary programs, restart your PC, or consider upgrading your RAM.

2. Check Storage Health and Disk Performance

Running out of storage space or having a slow hard drive can make your PC sluggish. 

How to Check Free Space and Disk Usage

  1. Open File Explorer and click This PC.
  2. Look at the storage bar under Local Disk (C:). If it’s almost full, your PC may slow down.

Using CHKDSK and Storage Diagnostic Tools

  1. Type cmd in the Windows Search bar and open the Command Prompt (run as administrator)
  2. Type chkdsk C: and press Enter to check for disk errors.
  3. You can also use Windows Disk Cleanup (type it in search ) to remove junk files. 

Tip: Keep at least 15-20% of your storage free for better performance.

3. Monitor Your PC’s Battery Health (for Laptops)

If your laptop’s battery drains too fast or doesn’t charge properly, checking battery health is a good idea.

How to Check Battery Status Using the Command Prompt

  1. Open Command Prompt (run as Administrator).
  2. Type: powercfg/batteryreprot and press Enter.
  3. It will generate ra eport – find it in C:\Windows\System32\battery-report.html. Open it in a browser to see battery health details.

Tips to Extend your Laptop’s Battery Life

  • Reduce brightness and background apps.
  • Use Batter saver Mode in Settings >Battery.
  • If the battery health is below 50%, consider replacing it.
